As per AHAM method since dehumidifier capacity depends on room area and current humidity level in room, They have classified areas into following four types:

How to calculate capacity of home dehumidifier?
There are different way to calculate dehumidifier capacity. But for home applications it is more suitable to calculate as per guideline provided by Association of Home Appliances Manufacturers (AHAM). As per AHAM method since dehumidifier capacity depends on room area and current humidity level in room, They have classified areas into following four types:
- Extremely Wet Room: These are room where humidity always more than 90% and there is condensation on whole room.
- Very wet room: These are room where humidity in range of 80% to 90% and we can observe condensation water drop formation of ceiling and ac grills.
- Very Damp Room: These are room where humidity level between 70% to 80% and we can observe not condensation but pilling of wall paints, black spot on wall, bad smell and very uncomfortable climate.
- Damp Room: These are room with humidity of around 60% to 70%.
Required airflow capacity of dehumidifier can be calculated by multiplying square feet area of room to ACH factor. ACH factor for above mentioned rooms are as follow:
- For extremely wet rooms, ACH factor is 6
- For Very wet room, ACH factor is 5
- For Very Damp rooms, ACH factor is 4
- For Damp rooms, ACH factor is 3.
What are features a home dehumidifier should have?
While buying unit for home you need to make sure that unit should have some important features. lets list down these features one by one
- Large Condensate Tank: Home unit should preferably have large built in tank possible to avoid frequent emptying of tank. However we need to keep in mind that large tank will increase size of unit. Hence unit will tank capacity of 4 to 6 liters are good for home.
- Continuous Drainage: Unit should have facility to connect hose pipe to unit to drain our condensate water continuously through hose pipe without getting accumulate in tank. This will help if you want to keep dehumidifier on when you are moving out.
- Hygrometer : With help of hygrometer unit can show current room humidity on its LCD panel. It is benefit us to know room temperature always.
- Humidity setting: Unit should have facility to set desired humidity level.
- Automatic operation: Unit should work automatically. Once user set desired humidity level then unit should turn off when room humidity reduce less than set humidity level and should automatically turn off if room humidity get increase more than set humidity level.
- Fan Speed: Unit should have at least two fan speed. This feature is useful when you like to run dehumidifier at night. Then you can put unit in low fan speed.
